BLK
AUGUST

The roots of Black August date back to 1960, when 18-year- old George Jackson received a one-year to life sentence after being convicted of robbery. Officially launched in 1979, it has spread from prison walls and serves as a month to  honor all those who faught for the collective progress of Black people and those who lost their lives unjustly to violence and systemic racism.  It is a time to practice self-care, educate, promote community and economic building.

To observe Black August, the community  is encouraged to focus on physical, mental and spiritual health and patron Black-owned businesses.
